Step 1: Decide what you are actually selling
To stand out on food delivery apps, you need a clear and specialised concept. Not a menu — a concept. Specifically, one that makes someone choose you over the ten other options on the app.
- Specificity wins. A delivery business built around one dish done very well (like a specific type of jollof rice, a signature suya, or a particular style of grilled chicken) is far easier to position and remember than a broad menu that tries to please everyone.
- Delivery suitability matters. The best delivery food travels well. It holds its texture and temperature over 20-30 minutes of transit. Test your dishes by letting them sit — if they are still good 30 minutes later, they are delivery-ready.
- Photos are part of the product. On a delivery app, customers decide whether to order based on a photo. If your food does not photograph well, it will not sell well. This is not about professional photography — it is about choosing food that looks as good as it tastes.
Step 2: Choose your delivery model
There are three realistic options for a new food delivery business:
- Delivery app partner. You list your food on an established delivery platform, which handles customer discovery, payment, and in most cases the couriers. You cook and hand off. This is the fastest way to reach customers without building your own infrastructure.
- Self-managed delivery. You take orders through your own channels — WhatsApp, Instagram, a simple website — and handle your own deliveries or hire couriers directly. You keep more margin but do all the work yourself.
- Hybrid. Many food businesses start self-managed for the control and margin, and add a delivery app later for reach. Or the other way around — start on an app to build ratings and reputation, then add direct ordering for loyal customers.
Most businesses starting out in delivery begin with a specialised app like Glovo. The infrastructure is already there and ready, and customers are already looking for food on those platforms.
Step 3: Sort out the basics before you launch
This is where many new food businesses cut corners — and pay for it later.
- Licences and registration. Check what your local government requires to operate a food business from home or a commercial kitchen. Requirements vary significantly by city and country. Getting this right from the start protects you and builds customer trust.
- Food safety. Even if the regulations in your area are minimal, basic food hygiene practice is non-negotiable. Customers who get sick do not come back, and they tell people.
- Packaging. Your packaging is the last thing a customer sees before they open the food. It protects the product and communicates something about your brand. Invest a little here — it pays back in reviews and repeat orders.
Step 4: Build your presence before your first order
You do not need a website or a marketing budget. You need two things:
- Good photos. Photograph your key dishes before you launch. Natural light, clean presentation, no busy backgrounds. These images will be your main sales tool on platforms and social media.
- A delivery app profile that is complete. If you are launching on a delivery platform, fill out every field. Write clear dish descriptions. Add accurate preparation times. An incomplete profile can cost you customers.
Step 5: Get your first orders and learn fast
The first month of any delivery business is a learning period.
- Analyse every order. What sold? What did not? Which dishes got complaints? Which ones generated repeat orders? This data is your most valuable asset in the early weeks.
- Ask for feedback directly. If you have a WhatsApp group or direct relationship with early customers, ask them what they would change. Most will tell you honestly, and most of what they say will be useful.
The businesses that grow fastest in delivery are not the ones with the best food on day one. They are the ones that learn from their customers and improve quickly.
What to do now
- 👉 Validate your concept: pick one food concept you can execute consistently and test it with people you know this week.
- 🏍️Research the delivery apps active in your city and what it costs to list your business on them.
- 📷Photograph your menu: take quality photos of your main dishes before you launch — you will need them everywhere.
- 📄 Check local regulations: review the requirements and licences needed in your area before you start taking orders from the public.
Frequently asked questions
How much money do I need to start a food delivery business?
It depends on your model. Starting from a home kitchen and listing on a delivery app can cost very little upfront — the main costs are ingredients, packaging, and the platform commission on each order. Setting up a commercial kitchen or hiring couriers requires more capital. The delivery app model is the lowest-barrier entry point for most people.
Do I need a commercial kitchen to start a food delivery business?
Not necessarily. Many food delivery businesses start from a home kitchen. The requirements vary depending on where you are — some cities have specific regulations for home-based food businesses, others do not. Check your local rules before you start taking public orders.
How do I get my first customers for a delivery business?
Start with people who already know you — friends, family, colleagues, your WhatsApp contacts. They are easier to reach, more forgiving of early imperfections, and more likely to give you honest feedback. From there, a complete and well-photographed delivery app profile is the most efficient way to reach new customers.
How long does it take to start making money from a food delivery business?
Most delivery businesses cover their direct costs (ingredients, packaging) within the first few weeks. Building a sustainable profit margin typically takes two to three months as you refine your menu, pricing, and operations. The biggest variable is how quickly you build ratings and repeat customers on your delivery platform.
What food sells best for delivery?
Food that travels well, photographs well, and has a clear identity. In most African markets, rice-based dishes, grilled proteins, and local staples that hold their quality over 20-30 minutes of delivery time perform consistently well. Novelty helps for visibility, but consistency is what builds repeat orders.
